Manchester United Trip
Our Branch laid on a trip to this game , faced with the worries of ” could we do it”. We were faced at the start with several people dropping out, and facing a big loss, but with the help of First Stop, we managed to put it back on track, with people joining us from as far away as Tiptree and Chelmsford, thanks to help from TWTD and the local press.
In the end the coach was nearly full. We pulled away from Haverhill at one o’clock for the long trip north. Eventually, after battling various hold-ups on the M6, plus a break at the services, we arrived at Manchester at 7:00 p.m.
On the way, various people helped with different fund raising events to keep the interest going, and to help the cost. There was a bus stop, plus a draw to pick the correct score for the game. I do not know how he did it, but against all the odds, one person won both competitions.
A lot of people had gone on this trip just to visit Old Trafford, and see Ipswich play there. While the result was not what we wanted, but, bearing in mind the difference in the financial standing of the two clubs (one Manchester United player earns the complete wage budget of the Ipswich Squad), the game helped to show what a standard Mick McCarthy had build up. We were not disgraced, and were a credit to the club.
Manchester United must be congratulated on the standard of their stewards, who were extremely helpful to the visiting fans.
We arrived back at 4:00 a.m.. Thanks must go to Tesco, who gave permission for people travelling by car to Haverhill to catch the coach, to park for free for the duration of the trip. Thanks also to Joe, our driver., and to all those on the coach who helped to make the day an enjoyable experience.
